The question is rarely "which is better" - it is "my car has been on one, can I put in the other." Short answer: yes, in both directions, and mixing them in an emergency will not hurt anything. The warnings you have heard mostly date from the 1970s.
- You can switch from mineral to synthetic at any mileage, and switch back.
- Mixing the two is safe - a synthetic blend is exactly that, sold in a bottle.
- Synthetic does not cause leaks. It can reveal one a seal was already developing.
- No flush or special procedure is needed. Drain, replace the filter, refill.
Switching mineral to synthetic
There is no mileage limit and no break-in ritual. Drain the old oil, change the filter, fill with synthetic in the grade your manual specifies. High-mileage engines are the ones people worry about most, and they are usually the ones that benefit - better cold-start flow and better deposit control on an engine that has been accumulating deposits for years.
The leak myth, and the grain of truth in it
Early synthetics in the 1970s used ester base stocks that could shrink certain seal materials. Modern synthetics do not, and seal compatibility is part of the certification every current oil carries. What does still happen: synthetic's detergents clean deposits that had been sitting in a marginal seal. The deposit was plugging a gap that was already there. The oil did not cause the leak - it stopped hiding it, and the seal was going to fail regardless.
Switching back to mineral
Also fine, provided your manual does not require synthetic. Nothing about having run synthetic makes the engine dependent on it. The one thing that changes is the interval: going back to mineral means going back to a shorter drain interval, so reset your expectations along with the oil.
Mixing them
If you are a quart low on a trip and the only bottle at the station is the wrong type, put it in. A low crankcase is a real and immediate problem; a diluted synthetic is not. You will end up with something functionally equivalent to a synthetic blend, and the dilution disappears at the next change.
- Match the viscosity grade first. Mixing 5W-30 synthetic with 5W-30 mineral is a non-event. Mixing grades matters more than mixing types.
- Do not plan around it. Topping up with the wrong type occasionally is fine; running a permanent mixture gives you mineral-oil performance at synthetic-oil prices.
- Do not stretch the interval afterward. A diluted synthetic ages closer to the mineral oil in it.
If your engine specifies synthetic and someone put mineral oil in it, you do not need to panic-drain it on the roadside - but change it at your earliest convenience rather than running the full interval.
