Every bottle on the shelf is either mineral, synthetic, or a blend of the two. The label language is marketing; the real difference is what the base oil is made of, and that single fact drives almost everything else - cold-start behavior, how long the oil survives, and what you pay.
- Mineral oil is refined crude. Synthetic oil is built from uniform, engineered molecules.
- The practical gap is widest at cold start and at the end of a long drain interval.
- Synthetic blends are mostly mineral oil with a synthetic fraction - closer to mineral than the name suggests.
- Your owner's manual decides. If it specifies synthetic, mineral oil is not a cheaper alternative, it is the wrong oil.
Where the two actually come from
Mineral (conventional)
Mineral oil is crude oil that has been refined and cleaned up. Refining removes the worst contaminants, but what is left is still a mixture of molecules of many different shapes and sizes. That variety is the root of its limitations: the smallest molecules boil off as the oil gets hot, and the least stable ones oxidize into deposits.
Synthetic
Synthetic base stock is assembled in a chemical plant so the molecules come out essentially uniform. Nothing is along for the ride. Uniform molecules mean less to evaporate, less to oxidize, and more predictable behavior across the temperature range the engine actually sees.
The four differences that show up in practice
- Cold starts. This is the big one. Synthetic stays fluid at low temperature and reaches the top of the engine faster on a winter morning - and most engine wear happens in those first seconds.
- Deposit control. Mineral oil oxidizes sooner under heat, and oxidation is what becomes sludge and varnish. Turbocharged engines punish mineral oil hardest, because the turbo bearing cooks whatever oil sits in it after shutdown.
- Drain interval. Synthetic holds its properties longer. That is what makes extended intervals possible - though the interval still comes from your manual, not from the bottle.
- Price. Synthetic costs roughly two to three times more per quart. Over a year of normal driving that difference is small next to one repair caused by running the wrong oil.
So is mineral oil ever the right answer?
Yes - when the manual calls for it, the engine is older and lower-stress, and the change interval is short and actually respected. An engine designed in an era of conventional oil, driven gently, changed on time, is fine on mineral oil. What does not work is stretching mineral oil across a synthetic-length interval, or putting it in a modern turbocharged engine that specifies synthetic.
Check the oil cap and the manual before the price tag. An engine that specifies a synthetic 0W-20 will not be happier with a mineral 10W-30 that costs less - the viscosity grade and the specification are requirements, not suggestions.
